small communities, or who are connected with no centre, have combined to swell the Hongkong Funds.

I would draw attention to the Chinese subscrip- tions. At the opening of the collection, I impressed very strongly on the community in general, and especially on the Chinese, the objects of the Fund as laid down in your telegram of 7th September, 1914 and pointed out that local charities
should on no account be allowed to suffer. The special Chinese subscription list, however, under the management of a purely Chinese Sub-Committee, on 31st December reached the splendid total of $63,820.67: and there are in addition many subscriptions from Chinese appearing in other general lists in the Colony both single and monthly subscriptions which it has been impracticable to pick out for the purpose of entering under the special heading. You will be glad to learn that the local Chinese charities are still as generously supported as
before.

The Portuguese Community here is small and comparatively very poor. But their names appear in many lists and, owing to their inability to make single subscriptions of any large amount, as a rule in the monthly subscription lists. These subscriptions I would especially desire should not be omitted in any expression of your appreciation of the efforts of the Community.
